The corner of the couch

The corner of the couch

Recently, I came into the realization that I am a clumsy person - an extremely clumsy person. I bump into walls, tables, and objects, almost as if it were intentional.

In the past I never really thought much of it. I just happened to enjoy leaving my mark with scuffs and scratches. But it’s revealing of something much greater.

An alarming carelessness for my surroundings. An inability, or perhaps even a reluctance, to pay attention to the finer details. It’s probably not that deep, and I’m trying to convince myself of that. But when I begin to relate this to my actions and integrity with my everyday life, I brood.

At my core, I am disposed to carelessness and fragile incompetence. If I can’t walk in a straight line whilst being mindful of the hallway, how am I to expect myself to execute on the greater goals in life that require incomparable levels of focus and strenuousness. Is it possible for a person to be both respected and a bumbler? Certainly possible, but I’m not a fan of the odds.

The corner of the couch that I stubbed my toe on. The very incident that inspired this writing, will be the last.
